CICC asks IT communities to help gov't vs school violence

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) on Sunday asked IT communities to "come forward" and help the government amid the recent incident of school violence in South Cotabato that is being linked to the dark web.

"Sa ating mga kapatid, sa ating mga kasamahan, sa ating mga kaibigan sa mga iba't-ibang mga ICT communities, hacking communities, computer forums, kung may alam kayo or may access dito, mag-come forward kayo," said CICC executive director Aboy Paraiso in an interview with Super Radyo dzBB.

"Hindi na ito usapin ng i-correct niyo kami sa gobyerno, aminado kami na tayo na may kakulangan tayo sa pamahalaan, at kayo ho ang magpupuno ng mga kaalaman na 'yun," he added. "Magtulong-tulong tayo para sa ating mga kabataan. Please come forward. We don't need another incident like this, not at the expense of another child's life."

The Department of the Interior and Local Government earlier said that the shooter at Banga National High School was heavily into the dark web.

The police, on the other hand, said that the shooter was into online activities "showing violent activities."

According to CICC, the deep web is beyond what we can publicly access on the internet as it requires special software and even skills to get into it.

The dark web is mostly linked to illegal activities.

"These are the websites na wala sa mga browsers natin. Kailangan natin mag-access nito through some other forms of applications or systems, para ma-access natin ito. Kung saan naman mga iba't-ibang mga impormasyon, whether nagu-usap yung mga nasa hacking community, the illegal sales of illegal firearms, yung mga community na ayaw magpakilala or nagtatago, nandito sa forums na ito," said Paraiso.

The CICC advised parents to monitor their children's online activities.

"You better think again na parang anyone is being targeted right now. Kapag naging distant na yung mga anak niyo or medyo iritable na dahil may kausap silang iba, ibig sabihin napalitan na kayo bilang magulang," said Paraiso.
