Gov't prioritizing 111 MBG kitchen activation in remote areas

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government said it is prioritizing the activation of 111 Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) or MBG kitchens in the frontier, underdeveloped, and outermost (3T) regions during the initial phase of Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) expansion.

A total of 111 SPPG units are spread across nine provinces, including six provinces in the Papua region. The Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs said Southwest Papua has 14 SPPG units in 3T areas ready to operate.

"We came here to ensure this SPPG is truly ready," said Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan in an official statement received here on Thursday.

He said the ministry should not just pursue quick operation, but food quality, food safety, kitchen cleanliness, and service to beneficiaries must also be guaranteed.

Hasan made this statement while inspecting SPPG Sorong Moisegen Klasof, located about 60 kilometers from Sorong city, Southwest Papua, on Wednesday (September 2).

According to the Ministry, the SPPG is one of three 3T SPPG units in Sorong district and is planned to serve around 700 beneficiaries once activated.

Hasan said the operational readiness of SPPG units should not only be assessed based on buildings, but also food quality, kitchen cleanliness, food safety, and service to beneficiaries.

Besides school children, he asked that MBG services also reach pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers, and utilize safe and quality local food ingredients.

Previously, the Ministry designated 111 SPPG units as the initial phase priority for activation in six provinces in the Papua region, as well as Maluku, North Maluku, and East Nusa Tenggara. Priority was given, among others, to regions with high stunting prevalence.

Meanwhile, the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) recorded that around 2,700 SPPG units in 3T regions have been completed and are planned to be activated gradually starting in September 2026, based on the needs and readiness of each region.
