Coronation Street has confirmed that Debbie Webster's special point-of-view episode will air over the Christmas period.

Last month, Inside Soap and Digital Spy exclusively revealed plans for an experimental episode exploring the world from Debbie's perspective.

Now Corrie boss Kate Brooks has spoken about the plans for the first time, promising powerful scenes.

Sue Devaney, who plays Debbie, even underwent extra training behind the scenes to become the camera operator for the episode, which will show viewers exactly what her character sees.

Speaking at a Coronation Street press event, Brooks explained: "We've got some really special stuff coming up with Debbie. Sue is incredible and every single episode I see, I'm blown away.

"We've got a really special episode coming up over the Christmas period, which is a POV episode.

"I viewed it yesterday and it's insanely good – and powerful. It's a performance like you've never seen before, let's just put it that way!"

The episode is likely to use different editing techniques to explore Debbie's dementia and how it causes periods of confusion for her.

We've already recently seen Toyah Battersby briefly recast for a scene on the cobbles, to illustrate how Debbie didn't recognise her.

Sharing the longer-term plans for the story, Brooks continued: "Obviously as Debbie's dementia continues to progress, there's a slight decline for Debbie – and we will start to get to the really tough parts of it as a family.

"Her friends rally round too. This gang of women [Debbie's Angels] will become really key ingredients into rallying round her and making sure that she's okay and she's supported.

"There'll still be laughs, there'll still be fun along the way. But we are getting to the stage now where it's getting a bit more serious."

In the meantime, another special episode airing this Monday (9 November) delves deeper into the dynamics between Debbie's friends.

The episode, focused on Debbie's Angels, sees Abi, Bernie, Christina, Glenda and Sally gather to support her when she summons them to the flat with a favour to ask.
