How to avoid rental disputes: Delhi Police plans awareness session for Northeast tenants

Delhi Police will hold an awareness programme next week to help people from the Northeast, including Gorkhas from Darjeeling and Ladakhis, better understand issues related to rental agreements and disputes over security deposits with landlords.The programme, organised by the Special Police Unit for North-East Region (SPUNER), will be held at 3.30 pm on September 1 at the SPUNER office in Nanak Pura, Moti Bagh, according to news agency PTI.The initiative will focus on helping tenants understand their rights and responsibilities and avoid disagreements with landlords, particularly over the payment, refund and deduction of security deposits.

Focus on rent agreements and proof of payment

According to the circular released, the awareness programme will cover the importance of having written rent agreements, understanding issues related to security deposit refunds and deductions, tenant responsibilities and preserving documents and proof of payments."The Awareness Programme will focus on sensitising the North-Eastern people regarding written rent agreements, security deposit/refund/deductions, tenant responsibilities and preservation of relevant documents/proof of payment," the circular said.Tenants will also be advised to safely keep rent agreements, payment records and other relevant documents that could be required in the event of a dispute with a landlord.

Advisory to be circulated across Northeast community

The police plan to circulate the advisory widely among members of the Northeast community living in Delhi with the help of Delhi Police Northeast Region personnel, students and community leaders.The programme will also include Gorkhas from Darjeeling and Ladakhis, according to the circular."Therefore, DPNErs & students and community leaders are hereby requested to attend the aforesaid awareness programme and facilitate wide dissemination of the above advisory amongst the North-Eastern community in Delhi," it said.The initiative will also cover ways to prevent and resolve disputes over security deposits between tenants and landlords.
