Americans vote for new Congress members in US midterm election

Translate

Millions of Americans are voting at polling stations across the United States to elect new members of Congress in the country’s midterm elections.

The election is expected to play a major role in shaping the nation’s political direction and the balance of power in Washington.

American voters are choosing representatives for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, alongside 35 seats in the Senate, including two special elections.

Several states are also holding gubernatorial elections.

The election comes at a critical moment for President Donald Trump‘s administration as Republican and Democratic parties compete to secure control of Congress for the remaining two years of his presidential term.

Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate. They also hold a slim majority in the House of Representatives. However, Democrats hope to gain enough seats to take control of both the Senate and the House.

Among the most closely watched races are Senate seats in Alaska, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas.

Whichever party controls Congress will determine the balance of power in Washington. The midterm results affect the legislative agenda and control of congressional committees.

A Republican majority in both houses of Congress would give President Donald Trump an easier path to enact his desired agenda for the remainder of his term.

If Democrats take back a majority in either or both chambers, they can have a greater say in the nation’s laws,

US President Donald Trump has campaigned for weeks for Americans to vote Republican.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that in September, he promised to pay every adult American $5,000 if Republicans retain control of Congress.

However, Republicans worry that Mr Trump’s deep unpopularity could affect how the party fares in the election. His unpopularity is driven by discontent over inflation and high consumer and gas prices.

It has also been linked to the trade war with China and Canada. There are also concerns about the US war with Iran.

Mr Trump, on Tuesday, labelled the upcoming midterm elections as the most important “in our lifetime.”

He also labelled the Democratic candidates “the most extreme and dangerous” list of candidates in the country’s history.
