KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 — A road maintenance supervisor was killed and a lorry driver injured early today when a suspected drunk driver crashed into them along Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the 26-year-old driver recorded a breath alcohol level of 64mg/100ml, NST reported.
The suspect was arrested and remanded for three days until Monday to assist in investigations.
The crash occurred at around 5.00am when the car, travelling from Jalan Damansara towards Jalan Parlimen, lost control and struck two workers in the left lane.
"The victim, a supervisor, was pronounced dead while receiving treatment, while another worker, a 49-year-old lorry driver, sustained injuries to his head and right hand. The lorry driver is receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital. The car driver escaped uninjured.
"The five workers, comprising a supervisor, a lorry driver and three Bangladeshi workers, had been carrying out warning sign installation works under a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) contract.
"The work began at 11pm on Oct 23 and ended at 4am today," he said in a statement.
Zamzuri said the case is being investigated under Sections 44(1)(b) and 44(1A)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs causing death and injury.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or visit the nearest police station.
