2nd Test: Hasan Mahmud's six-for not enough as West Indies take control; Bangladesh suffer injury scare

Hasan Mahmud produced a stunning bowling effort to keep Bangladesh in the contest, but West Indies remained firmly in the driver's seat at the end of Day 2 of the second Test in Sylhet on Friday.

The Bangladesh pacer claimed 6/90 to bowl out the visitors for 356, but the hosts stumbled to 88/3 in reply and were still trailing by 268 runs at stumps.Bangladesh also suffered a major injury scare when opener Shadman Islam twisted his left ankle while chasing a ball towards the boundary. The batter, who scored a century in the first Test, was stretchered off the field and taken to hospital for an MRI scan and further assessment, leaving the hosts potentially short of a specialist opener.Towhid Hridoy was unbeaten on 29, while veteran Mushfiqur Rahim was batting on 19 when bad light brought an early end to the day's proceedings. Bangladesh, already trailing 0-1 in the series, face an uphill task to avoid another defeat.

Hasan strikes back with six-wicket haul

Resuming at 235/4, West Indies looked set for a substantial first-innings total as overnight centurion Amir Jangoo and Justin Greaves continued their fifth-wicket partnership. The pair added 106 runs before Hasan returned with the second new ball to turn the momentum.

The pacer first bowled Jangoo, who added 22 to his overnight score to finish with an impressive 133 off 235 balls, including 13 fours and two sixes. Hasan then removed West Indies captain Roston Chase for a duck with the next delivery. He came agonisingly close to a hat-trick, but Joshua Bishop survived an lbw decision after successfully reviewing the umpire's call. Hasan eventually dismissed Bishop, who made 23, and Shamar Joseph to complete his six-wicket haul.

It was his first five-wicket haul on home soil.Mehidy Hasan Miraz provided support with two wickets, removing Greaves for 51 and Jayden Seales to end the West Indies innings at 356 shortly after lunch.

Shadman injury compounds Bangladesh's troubles

Bangladesh's reply began on a worrying note with Shadman unavailable after his injury. Nayeem Hasan was drafted in as a makeshift opener but lasted only a few overs before Seales had him caught by Brandon King at slip.Justin Greaves then accounted for Tanzid Hasan, who made 16, with debutant Kevin Wickham taking a sharp catch at cover point.

The hosts slipped further when Shamar Joseph bowled captain Najmul Hossain Shanto for 18, leaving Bangladesh at 51/3.Hridoy and Mushfiqur then combined to steady the innings, although scoring remained difficult against a disciplined West Indies attack. Mushfiqur, returning after missing the first Test with a finger injury, survived an lbw appeal on umpire's call and gradually settled in.The pair took Bangladesh to 88/3 before fading light forced the players off. With a 268-run deficit and Shadman's availability uncertain, the hosts have plenty of work ahead on Day 3.

  • Brief scores: West Indies 356 (Amir Jangoo 133, Kevin Wickham 61, Justin Greaves 51; Hasan Mahmud 6-90) lead Bangladesh 88/3 (Towhid Hridoy 29*, Mushfiqur Rahim 19*; Justin Greaves 1-10) by 268 runs.
