Damage from hospital fire to have 'significant impact' on beds

Translate

Tasmania Police is investigating a fire at a hospital in north-west Tasmania.

Emergency crews were called to the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie about 6:30pm Saturday, following reports of a fire in the hospital's inpatient mental health unit, the Spencer Clinic.

One person is in custody, assisting police with their inquiries.

Department of Health secretary Dale Webster said all patients in that unit, as well as the neighbouring paediatric unit, were evacuated.

"The fire has primarily impacted the Spencer Clinic, however other adjacent areas will need to be assessed once the site is handed back by the fire service," he said.

"Patients have been relocated to safe and appropriate areas and arrangements are being made to ensure continuity of care and treatment.

"Some patients are being transferred to other facilities where required."

He said all patients were confirmed safe and no injuries were reported.
