SAPS shuts down viral ‘Kempton Park serial killer in Potch’ claims

North West police have issued a stern warning against spreading a viral social-media claim that a so-called “Kempton Park serial killer” has moved to Potchefstroom.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said on Wednesday that Potchefstroom police found no official report or complaint to support the claims circulating online.

The viral message claims a suspect linked to the Kempton Park investigation moved to Potchefstroom and alleges that police launched a major operation involving drones, specialised units and a mobile command centre.

North West police also found no evidence to support claims of an incident near the Bult, the description circulating of an alleged suspect or the deployment of specialist police resources in the city.

“The public is urged not to treat this circulating message as an official SAPS alert unless and until it is confirmed through SAPS communication channels,” police said.

SAPS acknowledged the ongoing investigation into the deaths of women in the Kempton Park area, but said those cases do not prove that a suspect connected to the investigation has moved to Potchefstroom.

Police have also not established that one person killed all eight women whose deaths SAPS is investigating across Ekurhuleni.

‘Do not create unnecessary panic’

North West Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Ryno Naidoo urged residents to stay calm and vigilant.

He said police understood the fear the message could cause, particularly among residents and students.

“We appeal to the community not to spread unverified information or create unnecessary panic, because any genuine operational development or public safety warning will be communicated through official SAPS channels,” Naidoo said.

He urged people to check information before forwarding alarming messages on social media.

Police urge residents to remain vigilant

SAPS nevertheless urged residents to take sensible safety precautions, particularly after dark.

Additionally, police advised people to avoid walking alone where possible, use well-lit areas and remain aware of their surroundings.

They also urged residents and businesses to report actual criminal incidents directly to police rather than investigate or confront suspects themselves.

Police warned that false and misleading social-media posts can spread fear and divert police resources from genuine investigations. As such, police urged the public to rely on official police channels for verified safety alerts and developments.
