A 23-year-old woman was shot and killed during a robbery in Tembisa on Monday morning, Gauteng police have confirmed.

Police said the woman was on her way to work when the incident occurred in Temong, on Mapungubwe Street, at around 05:45. Her belongings were taken during the robbery.

Gauteng police are now investigating a case of murder and robbery following the shooting. The woman’s identity has been established, but her family has yet to be formally notified of her death.

The killing comes as South Africa reels from a wave of gun violence that has left dozens dead in recent weeks. Over the past weekend alone, at least 28 people were killed in two mass shootings, hours apart.

On Saturday night, eight gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols stormed a tavern in Wedela, near Carletonville, southwest of Johannesburg, and opened fire on patrons inside and outside the venue.

Seventeen people were killed and 15 were injured, with the death toll rising to 18 by Monday morning as another victim died in the hospital. The suspects burnt two vehicles before fleeing.

Hours later, in the early hours of Sunday morning, 10 people were killed and 11 wounded when gunmen opened fire at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, near Cape Town. Five victims died at the scene, while the remaining five succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

The weekend bloodshed came days after 12 people, including a pregnant woman, were killed when multiple gunmen attacked a house party in KwaMakhutha township, south of Durban, on Tuesday, 22 September.

No arrests have been made in connection with Monday’s incident. Police said they were following up on leads and urged anyone with information to contact their nearest police station.
