New FM Arrmanatha Nasir backs Indonesia's UN Security Council bid

Indonesia will once again run for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029–2030 term.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Newly appointed Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir said Indonesia would continue pursuing its established foreign policy, including its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2029–2030 term.
Following his inauguration at the State Palace, here on Thursday, Foreign Minister Arrmanatha stressed that whoever holds the position must adhere to policies stipulated by law, particularly Indonesia’s independent and active foreign policy principle.
"My task here is to continue what has been carried out by Foreign Minister Sugiono, who is now the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture. Naturally, we will continue to prioritize matters that serve the national interest," the minister said.
He said these priorities would primarily involve advancing Indonesia’s national interests, as outlined in Asta Cita, the government’s priority programs.
The foreign minister also reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to contributing to stability at both the regional and global levels.
To this end, Indonesia announced at this year's United Nations General Assembly its intention to seek election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
"Indonesia will once again run for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029–2030 term. This demonstrates Indonesia's readiness to play an active role in maintaining stability, peace, and security, as well as advancing multilateralism," the minister said.
He said these policies would remain among his priorities during his tenure as foreign minister.
Regarding his appointment to replace Sugiono, who was also inaugurated as Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture on Thursday, Arrmanatha said he had only received the news earlier that afternoon. The former deputy foreign minister said he was with Sugiono at the Foreign Ministry office when he received news of his appointment.
Asked whether the number of deputy foreign ministers would be increased following his appointment, the minister said he had not yet received any information on the matter.
"For now, there are still two deputy foreign ministers," he said, referring to Anis Matta and Arif Havas Oegroseno.
