Minister Nazara assures Govt will refund overpaid tax

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara assured business owners who meet the requirements will receive refunds for overpaid taxes.

"If it is a right if the business players, it will certainly be granted," Nazara said during a press conference on "APBN KiTa on September 2026 edition" at the Ministry of Finance Office in Jakarta on Friday.

The Directorate General of Taxes at the ministry, he added, has been processing the refund payments in accordance with applicable tax mechanisms and regulations.

At the same time, the Finance Ministry encourages tax compliance among all business players, including the proper handling of refunds in line with existing rules.

"I have instructed the Director General of Taxes (Bimo Wijayanto) to ensure proper management of the refund process, including communication regarding how we handle these refunds," Nazara said.

Previously, Bimo Wijayanto said tax refunds are processed selectively and in a measured manner.

According to Wijayanto, the tax refunds for a number of companies are currently undergoing an audit, a process governed by Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that must be adhered to.

"Audits also have standards, SOPs. Naturally, the Directorate General of Taxes is not in a position to violate those SOPs," he added.

He also noted future refund policies would follow the directives from Minister Nazara. Furthermore, tax refunds will be adjusted to align with funding and fiscal requirements.

"We must also align with development funding needs. Additionally, we need to manage the deficit to ensure the State Budget (APBN) remains strong, healthy, resilient, and sustainable," he said.

It should be noted tax refunds can be issued under two conditions, as explained on the official Directorate General of Taxes website.

First, a refund for a tax payment that was not actually due. The situation arises when a taxpayer has made a tax payment, even though, under applicable regulations, the tax did not actually need to be paid.

Secondly, the refund of overpayment regarding Income Tax (PPh), Value Added Tax (PPN), and/or Sales Tax on Luxury Goods (PPnBM).

A refund in such cases may be claimed when the amount of tax paid by the taxpayer exceeds the amount actually due.
