GKIDS announced last week that it is rescreening Baku Kinoshita and writer Kadzuya Konomoto's original anime film The Last Blossom (Housenka) on October 13, the same day that the film will launch digitally on home video.

GKIDS had initially planned to only screen the film on August 30-31. However, theatergoers had posted that English subtitles were off by several seconds during screenings for the first day, and some screenings had been cancelled for the second day. ANN reached out to GKIDS at the time. GKIDS confirmed with ANN that it was reviewing its options and possible makeup screenings of the corrected verision.

The company issued a statement during that time responding to fans' complaints regarding the incorrectly timed subtitles and the consequent screening cancellations:

"On Sunday [August 30], GKIDS became aware of a subtitling glitch in our DCP for The Last Blossom. We immediately instructed theaters to remove shows from sale and issue refunds to affected customers until we could identify and resolve the issue. On Monday [August 31], we were able to provide a corrected version of the film to theaters. While some were able to update their screenings, others were unfortunately unable to do so in time, resulting in canceled shows.

We deeply apologize for this issue and to all moviegoers affected, whether you attended a screening or had one canceled. We brought The Last Blossom to cinemas because it is a distinctive and wonderfully original work, and we are sorry that we fell short of the presentation that audiences expect. GKIDS believes the theatrical experience is central to film culture, and we know the time and sacrifice fans make to share this experience together.

We are currently reviewing options including makeup screenings of the corrected version, to ensure audiences can experience this special film. Thank you for your patience and support as we work to put this right."

GKIDS describes the story:

Former yakuza Akutsu is serving life in prison after a middling career in the underworld. On the night he lays dying in his cell, he reminisces with his only companion, a smart-mouthed flower growing out of a can, about the choices that brought him here, the woman he loved, and a child he would give everything to protect. Is redemption out of reach?

Kaoru Kobayashi and Junki Tozuka both play protagonist Minoru Akutsu at both his past and present, respectively. Hikari Mitsushima and Yoshiko Miyazaki similarly voice Akutsu's partner Nana Nagata at different points in her life. Pierre Taki voices the talking Housenka flower.

Kinoshita directed the film, with Konomoto credited for the script and the original concept. CLAP (Pompo: The Cinéphile, The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes) was in charge of animation production, and Michinoku-Toge drafted concept art. The band cero composed the film's music and performed the film's theme song "Moving Still Life."

The film opened in Japan in October 2025. The film played in the Feature Film Competition at last year's Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2025. A preview of the film was part of the Work in Progress lineup in last year's Annecy Film Festival.

Kinoshita and Konomoto previously collaborated on the ODDTAXI anime from 2021.
