There’s Surprising New Hope That Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Can Save Its Premature Ending

There is surprising hope that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy can fix its unfairly premature ending. Executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy premiered in January with a plan to run at least four seasons and tell the full college experience of its cast of cadets. However, Paramount+ canceled Starfleet Academy in March; and season 2 will be the show's last.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 was in production in 2025 and into early 2026 while season 1 was streaming on Paramount+. Filming of Starfleet Academy season 2 wrapped in February, and the show's cancellation came a month later. Discussing Starfleet Academy season 1's finale, co-showrunner Noga Landau revealed that season 2 ends on a cliffhanger, as they hoped Paramount+ would renew the show for season 3.

The news that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 would end inconclusively was an added disappointment to fans who wanted to see the cadets' complete college experience and their eventual Starfleet assignments. Starfleet Academy is already the only live-action Star Trek series to end after only two seasons. A cliffhanger ending was extra disheartening and deeply unfair to Starfleet Academy's characters and audience.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy May Be Able To Fix Its Series Finale Cliffhanger Ending

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's final season may have a better ending than a cliffhanger after all. Speaking to ScreenRant, Christina Chong revealed that even though Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series wrapped last December, she and other members of the cast and crew returned to Toronto to film additional scenes in February. Strange New Worlds' reshoots added Christina's dog, Runa Ewok, into the show.

Christina Chong: "I actually finished [filming] in February. My last shoot date was February because they wanted to add more Runa into the show, so we had a dog day unit in which we filmed this scene. Actually, this scene [Runa joining the Enterprise in "Once La'an a Time"] was filmed, and not everyone came back, but the crew came back, and Jess came back, and I think Melissa came back to film extra Runa scenes."

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's sets were torn down in April, and parts of the USS Athena were auctioned off in the spring. If Strange New Worlds was able to return to the still-standing sets for reshoots before the USS Enterprise sets were razed, then there's a chance that Starfleet Academy was afforded the same privilege by Paramount+.

If Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was able to return for reshoots, then, at least, they could resolve the series' cliffhanger ending, and possibly reveal what happened in the cadets' final two years at the Academy. It may even take the form of the yearbook-style closing credits of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1's finale.

Perhaps reshoots will update the post-Academy futures of Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), Genesis Lythe (Bella Shepard), Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diané), Darem Reymi (George Hawkins), Series Acclimation Mil (Kerrice Brooks), Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner), Ocam Sadal (Romeo Carere), and Keats (Ruaridh Aldington), the newest cadet joining Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2.

Paramount+ Has A History Of Giving Canceled Star Trek Additional Filming

In fairness to Paramount+, the streamer's cancellations of its Star Trek series sometimes come with an olive branch. When Star Trek: Discovery was abruptly canceled in 2024, the platform paid for three days of reshoots. This allowed executive producer Michelle Paradise, cast, and crew to return to film a 12-minute coda to give Star Trek: Discovery proper closure after the series was originally expected to run for 7 seasons.

Similarly, Paramount+ wanted to cancel Star Trek: Strange New Worlds with season 4, and offered a two-hour movie to wrap up the series. Executive producer Akiva Goldsman negotiated with the streamer and got a 6-episode fifth and final season to finish Strange New Worlds' story of how the USS Enterprise transfers from Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) to Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley).

Paramount+ and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's producers have made no mention of any reshoots, but given how the issues with Discovery and Strange New Worlds' premature cancellations were amicably resolved, it's possible that executive producer Alex Kurtzman was also able to secure a better means of ending Starfleet Academy that would be more satisfying to fans and better serve the show than a cliffhanger.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will begin promotion for season 2 at New York Comic Con in October, which will hopefully reveal a premiere date, key art, and new footage. Perhaps there will also be info on whether Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will have a better ending than leaving the fates and futures of the cadets unanswered.
