Egypt ranks among world’s leading fertilizer producers, exporters

Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem said Egypt has established itself as a major global producer and exporter of fertilizers, supported by a strong industrial base, reliable energy supplies, and abundant natural resources, particularly phosphate, that are essential to fertilizer production.

Hashem said the fertilizer industry has benefited from significant government support in recent years, as global crises and regional geopolitical tensions disrupted fertilizer production in a number of countries.

He attributed the resilience of Egypt’s fertilizer industry to stable energy supplies, which allowed plants to maintain uninterrupted production, meet domestic demand and expand exports.

The Minister also pointed to rising European demand for Egyptian fertilizers in recent years, following the shutdown of a number of European fertilizer plants amid global energy crises. He said the stability of Egyptian production has strengthened the competitiveness of locally produced fertilizers and reinforced Egypt’s position in international markets.

Hashem also described sugar as a strategic commodity because of its direct bearing on food security and market stability. He said the ministry is working to increase domestic production and improve manufacturing efficiency with the aim of achieving self-sufficiency in sugar while expanding exports.

The Minister made the remarks during a visit to Suez Governorate, where he inspected a fertilizer plant and a sugar refinery in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, accompanied by Suez Governor Hany Rashad.
