Fifteen suspects were arrested on Friday night following violent protests which engulfed the city of Durban and surrounding suburbs.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said the latest arrests bring the number of suspects arrested to 19, including the four suspects who were arrested on Thursday for attempted murder and discharging a firearm in public.
The latest Durban unrest was triggered by anti-immigration protests, fuelled by misinformation about a Constitutional Court ruling on asylum seekers.
Friday night’s chaos has prompted Premier Thami Ntuli to call for the deployment of the army, and government spokesperson William Baloyi is pleading with people not to commit crimes despite genuine grievances.
