Star Wars is bringing back the Skywalker Saga – 7 years after it ended

Star Wars is set to revisit the Skywalker family with its next trilogy of films. The iconic sci-fi franchise announced seven years ago with the release of The Rise of Skywalker that it would be "the final instalment of the Skywalker saga".

But that will not be the case, with Deadline reporting that a new trilogy of the Skywalker Saga is coming, with Jon Watts set to helm the first instalment with a script from Simon Kinberg.

The publication said that Kinberg has been working on the new films since 2018, and that it will serve as the next chapter in the saga.

It's not Watts' first foray into the world of Star Wars, with the Spider-Man director having co-created, co-wrote, and directed episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

Kingberg, meanwhile, was a co-creator for Star Wars Rebels, an animated series designed to fill the gap between the events of Episode III and Episode IV.

He previously teased his approach to Star Wars speaking to Screen Rant last year, explaining his goal was to strike "a balance between big, epic science fiction storytelling with really intimate, dramatic character work".

"My favorite of the Star Wars movies is Empire Strikes Back, and it's because the balance between the epic and the intimate is so strong in that they're such personal stories," he said.

"The stakes are really personal, and yet, obviously, there's all kinds of great science fiction. I think Andor did an extraordinary job of that, as well. It was such an emotional, intense, personal show that also had, obviously, massive stakes to it, and politics, and all of that."

The report went on to claim that Daisy Ridley is being eyed to reprise her role as Rey for the upcoming project after first joining the franchise in 2015 for The Force Awakens.

The Skywalker Saga began in 1977 with Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, and continued with the prequel trilogy, which began with Episode I - The Phantom Menace in 1999.

The Saga was left off with the latest trilogy, which began with The Force Awakens and ended in 2019 with The Rise of Skywalker, led by Ridley's Rey.
