Aside from knowledge of the law, Associate Justice Japar Dimaampao on Monday said he wants Bar examinees to possess a good command of the English language as well as analytical ability.
During his interview with the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), he was asked by Batangas Representative Gerville Luistro whether he is in favor of a more rigid law school to reduce the number of individuals who fail the exams.
“I am known as a strict but reasonable law professor. I only pass those who possess the three qualities,” he said.
“So I am in favor of a Bar examination that must test the analytical ability of the examinees. And if we are strict on that, there will be less passers,” he added.
When asked how the public may better understand decisions, Dimaampao said that a decision must be clear in reasoning, consistent in doctrine, concise, and just in result.
Meanwhile, Dimaampao proposed three initiatives to minimize graft and corruption. These are to strengthen independent accountability, institutionalize transparency and digitalization, and build a culture of integrity.
The vacancy is due to the compulsory retirement of Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo on November 6 at the age of 70.
Other candidates include Senior Associate Justice Marvic Leonen, Associate Justice Benjamin Caguioa, Associate Justice Rodil Zalameda, and Associate Justice Midas Marquez. —LDF, GMA News
