FBI confirms extradtion of two Nigerians accused of sexual exploitation, extortion

The US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has confirmed that two Nigerians, Adebola Adekunle and Mudasiru Olawale, have been extradited to the US, where they are accused of “sexual exploitation of minors, coercion and enticement, extortion, distribution and production of child sexual abuse material, and other offences.”

FBI Director Kash Patel announced their return to the US in a Friday post on X, a few hours after Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, EFCC, announced the extradtion of the two men.

Mr Patel described both men as “high-value targets,” saying they were “brought back” to “face justice for alleged sextortion crimes and targeting minors.”

“Adebola Festus Adekunle and Mudasiru Afeez Olawale were arrested in Nigeria in 2023 and are now on U.S. soil,” he wrote.

Mr Patel added that one of their “alleged schemes resulted in the death of a child.”

EFCC announced extradition

PREMIUM TIMES reported that the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said Mudashiru Olawale and Adebola Adekunle were extradited on Wednesday.

Mr Oyewale said the extradition was facilitated by the Office of the Attorney of the Federation and the EFCC following investigations conducted in collaboration with the FBI.

According to the EFCC, the two men were separately identified in FBI investigations into sextortion schemes targeting male minors, particularly teenagers aged between 13 and 17.

“The schemes involved the use of Child Sexual Abuse Material, CSAM, to extort victims for money through various means, including money remitters, gift cards and cryptocurrency.

“The FBI investigations linked the activities of the alleged perpetrators to two separate cases involving American minors, who died by suicide after being subjected to online sexual exploitation and extortion,” the statement read.

How the alleged sextortion occurred

In one of the cases, the EFCC said a 13-year-old boy received a direct message on Instagram from a person who proposed an exchange of nude photographs.

The person allegedly later threatened to distribute the boy’s photographs to his Instagram contacts and demanded money from him.

“It was further revealed that communications reportedly continued despite the minor indicating that he intended to take his own life. The FBI subsequently developed actionable intelligence identifying individuals allegedly involved in the scheme and requested the assistance of the EFCC in identifying, investigating and prosecuting the perpetrators under applicable Nigerian laws,” the EFCC stated.

Mr Adekunle was arrested and brought before the EFCC, the commission said.

Olawale’s extradition

The EFCC said the FBI also sought the extradition of Mr Olawale over a seven-count charge relating to the alleged sexual exploitation of a minor.

The charges include sexual exploitation and attempted sexual exploitation of a minor resulting in death, enticement and attempted enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity, interstate threatening communications, and the distribution and attempted distribution of child pornography.

Following the extradition request, the EFCC initiated proceedings against Mr Olawale at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The case marked FHC/L/CS/353/2024 was heard before Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa. However, the Federal High Court rejected the extradition application on 10 June 2024.

The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation subsequently appealed the decision.

“Although the Judge refused the application during proceedings on June 10, 2024, the ruling was subsequently appealed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

“On July 7, 2026, the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, in Appeal No. CA/LAG/CV/721/2024, set aside the judgement of the Federal High Court, thereby paving the way for Olawale’s extradition to the U.S,” the statement added.

The EFCC said the extradition of the two suspects demonstrates the continued cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in tackling transnational financial and internet-related crimes.

It said the collaboration is particularly important in addressing online crimes involving the exploitation of minors and sextortion.
