Jelly Roll Drummer Learns Slipknot’s “Wait and Bleed” as Fast as Possible: Watch
Jelly Roll drummer Cody Ash took on Slipknot’s “Wait and Bleed” as part of Drumeo’s challenge for drummers to learn entire drum arrangements as fast as possible.
Unlike Drumeo’s popular “For the First Time” series, Ash was familiar with “Wait and Bleed,” but had never learned to play it on drums before. He revealed that late Slipknot founding member Joey Jordison had been his favorite drummer growing up and an early drum inspiration.
Ash’s familiarity with the song is immediately apparent as he nails some of the trickier iconic drum elements just minutes into the challenge. Commenting on the quickness with which he was able to dive into the track, Ash revealed that much of Jelly Roll’s band members are from hardcore and metal backgrounds and are allowed to indulge in their chops intermittently during live shows.
He delivers his final take just 32 minutes into the challenge, coming in significantly faster than some other drummers, such as Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy and his three-hour marathon learning Tool’s “Pneuma.” Ash’s performance is uncannily close to Jordison’s original drum track, earning rave reviews in the YouTube comments, including one that reads, “What an absolute treat. Such a good attitude and wow… 30 mins for that track is no joke!”
