Across Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man’s technology has revolutionized the battlefield. With Tony Stark’s technology, the heroes gain access to advanced weaponry, armor, artificial intelligence, drones, and much more, allowing them to stand against even the most overwhelming powers. That said, there have been a multitude of times when that tech falls into the wrong hands.
In both the films and the comics, Tony Stark’s technology has been stolen, hijacked, repurposed, or, in some cases, turned against its original purpose. When his enemies take direct control over this advanced equipment or learn to recreate it, they don’t hesitate to turn it against the heroes, making Iron Man’s greatest strength and advantages a double-edged sword.
Feilong's Stark Sentinels
In Invincible Iron Man, Feilong, a mutant-hating billionaire industrialist, takes over Stark Unlimited through market manipulation and stock acquisitions to force a buyout of the company. Immediately, he repurposed Stark’s technology and used Iron Man and War Machine blueprints to create Stark Sentinels to hunt down mutants.
As a leader of Orchis, an anti-mutant organization, Feilong used the heavily armored machines as an army that effectively devastated Krakoa, turning Tony’s own inventions against the X-Men. Given that these machines had Stark’s name and aesthetics, it framed Tony in the eyes of the public. However, rather than breaking down or falling into despair, Tony teamed up with Emma Frost to fight back against Orchis.
Thanos and the Nano-Gauntlet
Tony developed the Nano-Gauntlet along with Bruce Banner and Rocket in Avengers: Endgame in order to use the Infinity Stones safely enough to reverse Thanos’ Snap. During the battle on Earth, after Thanos’ original devastation had been reversed, the villain once again overpowered the heroes and seized the gauntlet for himself, putting the Avengers and the universe in danger.
Unfortunately for him, Iron Man managed to steal back the Infinity Stones by exploiting the shared nanotechnology between his own armor and the gauntlet without Thanos realizing it. Iron Man then used the Stones to erase Thanos and his forces at the cost of his own life. Despite failing to use the Stones to devastate the universe, he succeeded in stealing the nano-gauntlet and didn't hesitate to try to use it against the heroes.
Doc Ock Hacking the Iron Spider
During the bridge battle in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Octopus pins Peter Parker down and tears open the Iron Spider suit. The Stark-designed nanotechnology spreads onto Otto’s mechanical tentacles and seamlessly integrates with his existing arms, temporarily granting him access to the advanced armor technology that nearly crushes Peter.
However, this is short-lived as Peter soon finds that the nanotech can override Otto’s control of the tentacles, leaving Doc Ock effectively restrained and unable to fight back. Despite how quickly the tables were turned back in favor of the hero, Doc Ock didn’t waste a moment of the temporary enhancement to fight back.
Ultron Seized Control of the Iron Legion
In the MCU’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ultron was created by Tony and Bruce Banner as an ultimate global peacekeeping program. Unfortunately, Ultron came to determine that the greatest threat to global peace was humanity itself, leading to the program attacking J.A.R.V.I.S. from within the network, uploading its consciousness into a half-built drone, and taking control over Stark’s Iron Legion.
Ultron overrides all programming to turn the Iron Legion into personal enforcers that are turned against the Avengers and later uses the automated manufacturing facilities to create Ultron Sentinels that act as an army. In order to defeat Ultron, the Avengers needed to destroy every single drone, find a way to block Ultron’s access to the web, and destroy its physical body.
Norman Osborn Creating Iron Patriot
Norman Osborn’s rise during Marvel’s Dark Reign era followed the Skrull invasion. With S.H.I.E.L.D. dismantled and the establishment of H.A.M.M.E.R., Osborn himself is put in charge of national security, replacing Tony Stark, and granted him access to all of his confiscated resources, including an older Iron Man suit that went on to become the Iron Patriot armor.
Using his position of power, Osborn labels the real heroes as fugitives and terrorists that he actively hunted down with the Iron Patriot armor. He also led the Dark Avengers and Dark X-Men, a team of villains and manipulated anti-heroes masquerading as the true heroes. Osborn continued to use the Iron Patriot persona to wage war against the heroes until his regime ultimately collapsed during the Siege of Asgard.
The Vulture Weaponizing Stolen Technology
In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Adrian Toomes, known as the Vulture, uses stolen technology to upgrade their weapons. While the Vulture’s suit was built using alien tech, Toomes and his crew spent years hijacking Damage Control trucks to steal and reverse-engineer leftover Stark and Avengers technology to build modified weaponry.
By the climax of the film, the Vulture even hijacks Tony Stark’s automated cargo plane for one last heist; however, Spider-Man stops him from stealing the tech to sell or reverse-engineer. While the Vulture doesn’t succeed in stealing the cargo plane, using Stark tech to modify his crew’s weapons and battling a hero mid-heist show his willingness to turn the heroes’ technology against them.
Mysterio Controlling E.D.I.T.H.
Quentin Beck gained control over E.D.I.T.H. in Spider-Man: Far From Home after tricking Peter Parker into transferring ownership to him. When he put on the glasses, he officially gained full access to Stark’s tactical defense network and combat drones, which he used to create a massive illusion during the London attack.
While not stolen in the conventional sense, Mysterio’s careful manipulation and underhanded tactics made Spider-Man truly believe he was unworthy of Stark’s legacy, all while painting himself as a true, selfless hero and capable leader. In the end, Spider-Man discovered the truth behind the con and regained control of E.D.I.T.H., but not before Mysterio could orchestrate one final, personal attack by framing Peter for his murder and the attack on London.
Ivan Vanko Hijacks the War Machine
Justin Hammer gains access to Tony Stark’s Iron Man Mark II suit after James Rhodes takes the prototype following a drunken brawl, and the government hands it over to Hammer. He alters and weaponizes the suit, turning it into the War Machine armor, but mistakenly leaves behind a security flaw that Ivan Vanko takes advantage of.
During preparations for the Stark Expo, Vanko installs a backdoor that allows him to remotely control the suit and its weapons. He locks Rhodey in the armor suit and forces a fight with Tony. Vanko also took control of the Hammer Drones, using the stolen and modified Stark armor and combat drones to overwhelm Iron Man until Black Widow breaks into Hammer Industries and reboots the software.
The Armor Wars Conspiracy
In the Armor Wars storyline of the Iron Man comics, Spymaster steals Tony Stark’s Iron Man designs and sells them to Justin Hammer, who secretly distributes the tech among armored criminals and other users. When Tony discovers this, he begins tracking down every compromised suit to either reclaim or destroy it.
