Why SA and Zimbabwe want another bridge near Beitbridge

A proposed Third Limpopo Bridge could become a major boost for trade and transport between South Africa and Zimbabwe as the two countries move to turn their bilateral relationship into practical economic projects.

The construction of the bridge has been identified as one of several high-impact projects by South Africa and Zimbabwe, according to SAnews.

This follows the Fourth Session of the South Africa-Zimbabwe Bi-National Commission (BNC).

South Africa’s International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola said the project, together with the operationalisation of the Beitbridge One Stop Border Post, would be central to improving the movement of goods and people between the neighbouring countries.

The two countries occupy an important position in Southern Africa’s trade and logistics network because of their connection through the North-South Corridor and the Beitbridge border crossing.

“Our partnership must now translate ambition into implementation,” Lamola said.

Why the Third Limpopo Bridge matters

The proposed bridge is significant because Beitbridge is one of the most important links between South Africa and Zimbabwe, connecting the two countries while also providing a gateway into the wider Southern African region.

Greater capacity at the crossing could help support the movement of commercial traffic and strengthen the logistics chain linking South Africa with markets further north.

The bridge is therefore being considered alongside improvements to the border itself rather than as an isolated infrastructure project.

Lamola said closer cooperation in transport infrastructure, border efficiency, energy connectivity and the movement of goods and people would strengthen regional integration and support industrialisation across the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The operationalisation of the Beitbridge One Stop Border Post is expected to complement this objective by improving coordination between the two countries at one of their busiest points of entry.

Third Limpopo Bridge: Bigger economic plans

The Third Limpopo Bridge is only one part of a broader economic agenda being pursued by the two countries.

Other priority projects identified at the BNC include a fertiliser manufacturing plant, regional automotive component manufacturing, platinum group and precious metals value addition, as well as industrial parks and Special Economic Zones.

These projects point to an effort by South Africa and Zimbabwe to move beyond traditional cross-border trade and develop industries that can create jobs and strengthen regional value chains.

Lamola said the two countries also want to expand manufacturing capacity, promote mineral beneficiation, modernise agriculture and strengthen food security.

The focus will also include creating opportunities for small businesses, women and young people.

From agreements to implementation

The latest discussions come with an emphasis on implementation.

Lamola acknowledged that further work and consultation would be required before the identified priority projects could advance.

Several agreements are also expected to be signed when the two countries’ leaders meet, providing a legal framework for cooperation in areas including trade, investment and industrialisation.

The BNC also welcomed a Memorandum of Understanding on Diplomatic Training, which is intended to strengthen cooperation between the two countries’ diplomatic academies.
