Jennifer Lawrence lands next lead movie role in "ambitious" sci-fi thriller

With collaborations from Francis Lawrence and Martin Scorsese already in the pipeline, Jennifer Lawrence is an actor in high demand. And now, with a new Hunger Games film on the way, the star has reportedly joined an "ambitious" new project.

As per Variety, Lawrence will star in The Flood, the latest work from Weapons writer-director Zach Cregger. Little is known about the film, though it is said to be a thriller with sci-fi elements.

Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, co-chairs of Warner Bros Pictures, said: "Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today, and we are thrilled to have her at the centre of Zach's bold and wholly original vision for The Flood."

"Following our extraordinary experience together on Weapons, we could not be more excited to reunite with Zach and the team at Vertigo, as well as Amblin to bring this ambitious film to audiences around the world," they added.

Cregger, who is also known for Barbarian and Resident Evil, said: "Mike, Pam and the whole Warner Bros/New Line team were an absolute dream to collaborate with on Weapons, and I couldn't be happier to dive in with them again."

The acclaimed filmmaker, who will also serve as a producer on The Flood in addition to writing and directing, continued by saying: "Jennifer is one of a kind, and I'm beyond excited to see her in this role."

The sci-fi thriller is one of a few high-profile upcoming projects for Lawrence, with the actor set to feature alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Mads Mikkelsen in Scorsese's Gothic horror, What Happens at Night.

Before then, Lawrence will reprise her iconic role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, with the eagerly-awaited blockbuster set to hit the big screen in November.

The film is both a sequel to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and also a prequel to the main series, with the action focusing on Haymitch Abernathy (played here by Joseph Zada) as he competes in the 50th edition of the games.

The Flood and What Happens at Night have no release dates, while The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is released in cinemas on 20 November.
