Indonesia markets Muntok white pepper to 1,200 global restaurants

Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) will market Bangka Belitung Islands' "Muntok White Pepper" to 1,200 restaurants in 63 countries to expand exports of the region's flagship commodity.

"We are already working with 1,200 restaurants in 63 countries, and they currently lack spices and herbs," MSMEs Ministry Deputy for Medium Enterprises Bagus Rachman said here on Sunday.

He said the province's white pepper, known globally as Muntok White Pepper and holding an official Geographical Indication certificate, offers strong export potential for international dining establishments.

"Demand for cooking spices like white pepper is high, but proper accreditation has been lacking. The MSMEs Ministry addresses this through strategic holdings and the SAPA UMKM system," Rachman noted.

SAPA UMKM is an integrated digital platform offering MSMEs data verification, licensing, financing, digital bookkeeping, training, and global market access.

Rachman added that the ministry enrolled 1,300 local pepper farmers into a plantation cluster in Bangka Belitung Islands, urging them to register products on the SAPA application.

"We hope MSME players register on the SAPA app soon to access People's Business Credit financing and reach international markets," he said.

National Quarantine Agency (Barantin) Acting Deputy for Plant Quarantine Dian S.R. Kusumastuti noted that Bangka Belitung's pepper exports continue to rise alongside growing global demand.

Agency data shows Bangka Belitung exported 1,370 tons of white pepper worth Rp180 billion across 184 shipments in 2025 to destinations including Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, and Taiwan.

The positive trend continued into 2026, with exports reaching 919.5 tons worth Rp148.9 billion through June, up 25.75 percent from 731.2 tons in the same period last year.
