Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Merauke Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Leonardo Yoga said police officers and residents had extinguished a fire on vacant land near Harapan Makmur Village in Kurik Subdistrict, South Papua Province.

The fire broke out on Sunday, November 1. Officers and residents quickly responded to prevent it from spreading and threatening surrounding areas.

"After receiving a report, officers from the Kurik police station went to the scene and joined residents in extinguishing the fire using available equipment," Yoga said in Merauke on Monday.

He said the swift response reflected the police force's commitment to public safety and aimed to prevent losses and disruptions to residents' activities.

Officers also monitored the area to maintain public safety and order, and urged residents to remain alert to potential fires in their communities.

"We appreciate the swift response by Kurik police officers and residents in tackling the land fire in Harapan Makmur village," he said.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region V office in Jayapura reported 607 hotspots in Merauke: 35 with high confidence, 496 with medium confidence, and 76 with low confidence.
