Angie Gutierrez may have just given the clearest hint yet about when Rey Mysterio's career ends. She recently reposted an Instagram post suggesting the WWE and AAA Hall of Famer could retire in 2027, and it landed right as Dave Meltzer reported that Mysterio is thinking about stepping away next year, with a farewell tour expected to be part of it. Mysterio himself hasn't said anything, so everything here comes from a repost and a report. He's 51 and still working regularly, and if this is real, it would be another big retirement in a year that already saw two notable WWE names leave.
Angie Gutierrez's Instagram Repost Adds to Talk About Rey Mysterio's Retirement
Gutierrez isn't just some account sharing a random post. She's been around his wrestling life for decades, and Mysterio has said before that he wants to give back to her after all those years of support. That's probably why a simple repost got this much attention.
On the ring side, he doesn't look like somebody winding down. On the October 12 Raw, Mysterio beat Big Cass in a David vs. Goliath match against the seven-footer. Cass intercepted a dive to the outside, but Mysterio answered with a tornado DDT.
Then the referee turned to check on Mysterio, Dragon Lee ran in and attacked Cass, and Mysterio took that opening to hit a 619 and finish with a victory roll.
Dave Meltzer Has Reported a Possible 2027 Farewell Tour for the WWE Legend
His own comments over the last couple of years point in the same direction as the rumor.
Mysterio went into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023, and at Fanatics Fest NYC, before turning 50, he talked about wanting a send-off instead of a quiet exit. “Maybe a farewell tour,” he said, adding that he wanted something meaningful for himself and for the fans in the building.
In August, a report had him admitting that retirement had crossed his mind after he watched WWE legends leave. His body hadn't told him it was time yet, he said, and in 2024 he'd described the line as the point where his best stops being enough.
John Cena gives WWE a very recent blueprint for how that could look.
He announced his retirement in 2024, spent 2025 on a farewell tour against established names and newer stars, and his schedule was set to close on December 13, 2025 at Saturday Night's Main Event.
A Mysterio run could go the same way, with familiar rivals showing up again and younger wrestlers getting a spot across the ring from him.
There's also a contract detail that could matter. Mysterio signed a new WWE deal in December 2023 that was believed to run for three years. If that length is right, the deal expires around the end of this year, so WWE would have to decide soon anyway what it wants his 2027 to look like.
