Govt pledges to secure 3-kg LPG supply despite projected quota breach

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has pledged to ensure the availability of subsidized 3-kilogram liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, even as national consumption is projected to exceed the 2026 state budget quota.

"The state is committed to ensuring that the public's energy needs are met," the ministry's spokesperson Dwi Anggia told ANTARA here on Monday.

She emphasized that the government wants to prevent any scarcity or difficulties in obtaining the essential fuel. To achieve this, officials will carefully review actual market demand and distribution channels.

If a quota adjustment is deemed necessary, the government will evaluate the situation using established mechanisms, Anggia added.

"We must not let those who genuinely need it face difficulties in accessing the 3-kg LPG cylinders," she stated.

However, Anggia stressed that the core issue extends beyond continuously raising the quota to match demand, as there is a persistent upward trend in subsidized gas consumption.

"If the solution is merely to increase the quota, the subsidy problem will never be resolved. What we need to fix is the governance," she remarked.

Earlier on Wednesday (August 26), the ministry's Director General of Oil and Gas Laode Sulaeman revealed that 5.05 million metric tons of 3-kg LPG had already been distributed by July out of the 8 million metric ton quota set for the entire year.

By the end of 2026, Sulaeman projected that distribution would reach 8.677 million metric tons, or 108.46 percent of the allocated quota.

Looking ahead, subsidized gas consumption in 2027 is expected to climb further. According to the 2027 Draft State Budget, the volume quota for the 3-kg cylinders will be raised to 8.9 million metric tons, reflecting a consistent year-over-year rise in national demand.
