Macro Acquires Streaming Service AllBlk From AMC Global Media

Translate

Charles D. King‘s Macro is getting into the direct-to-consumer business, acquiring streaming service AllBlk from AMC Global Media.

The service, which targets Black viewers, was launched in 2014 as UMC (short for Urban Movie Classics) by businessman and BET founder Robert L. Johnson. His company, RLJ Entertainment, which also owned streaming assets like Acorn TV, was acquired by AMC in 2018. Original series on AllBlk include G.R.I.T.S., D.O.P.E. Unit, Jupiter Jones and Wild Rose.

An announcement of the deal said the ownership transition would be “seamless,” with the platform remaining independent and continuing to support its existing slate and content library. Macro said it plans to invest in original programming, strengthen audience engagement and integrate the streamer into its studio operations.

Macro launched in 2015 as a multiplatform company with a mission to represent the voice and perspectives of Black people, indigenous people and people of color. King, its founder and CEO, is a former William Morris agent and producer. Its film studio slate has included Judas and the Black Messiah, Fences and One of Them Days and it has made series like Apple TV’s Government Cheese. Macro also has venture capital, management and brand divisions.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

A subscriber count for AllBlk has not been reported of late, but the $7-a-month service had been part of a potent roster of niche streamers under the AMC Global Media tent. Streaming revenue now exceeds revenue from linear TV at AMC, which operates a handful of legacy cable networks. Like others in media, the company no longer reports subscriber tallies for the whole portfolio, which includes AMC+, Shudder, Acorn and the recently launched All Reality. It was 10.4 million at the end of 2025, flat with 2024.

“At a time of significant disruption and consolidation across the media industry landscape, Macro sees an opportunity to invest in a focused platform with a clear audience and strengthen it through greater resources, content and creative partnerships,” King said in a statement. “AllBlk adds an additional piece to that vision with this opportunity to build upon what has made the platform successful.”

AMC Global Media CEO Kristin Dolan said AllBlk has had “a fantastic year,” setting the stage for further growth. She noted that AMC has been an investor in Macro for nearly a decade.

“Charles and the entire team at Macro bring the expertise to further AllBlk’s strong trajectory,” Dolan said. “They have a great vision for AllBlk and I’m particularly pleased that we will continue to be involved as investors and through a new content licensing agreement between our companies that will serve these passionate fans for years to come.”
