Habagat leaves P112-M agri damage, affected 52,642 in Oriental Mindoro
CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — Persistent rains brought by the southwest monsoon have left an estimated P112 million in agricultural damage and affected 52,642 individuals across Oriental Mindoro, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said on Monday (Aug. 31).
In its report, a copy of which was furnished the Inquirer, the PDRRMO said that continuous moderate to heavy rainfall caused rivers and creeks to swell up and drainage systems to burst, triggering floods in low-lying and flood-prone areas that inundated villages, roads, and farmlands across several municipalities.

As of Aug. 31, floodwaters have receded in 67 barangays, but the monsoon left a trail of destruction — one fatality was recorded in Baco municipality, while 12 landslides and three instances of riverbank erosion were reported across the province.

Eighteen houses were totally damaged and 76 others partially damaged. Three vehicular accidents were also linked to the inclement weather.
The heavy rains prompted the suspension of classes at all levels provincewide and work at the Provincial Capitol.
PDRRMO Head Vinscent Gahol told the Inquirer that local disaster offices remain on full alert. “All local DRRMOs are still closely monitoring major river systems and providing assistance to evacuees still in evacuation centers,” Gahol said.
Damage to infrastructure has yet to be determined, as engineering offices of affected local governments are still consolidating their reports, Gahol added. INQ
