Amazon's New TV Remake Of Classic 66-Year-Old Crime Western Gets Major Production Timeline Update

Jeff Dodge (he/him), a published author and graduate of Western Washington University, has been a TV news editor for many years and has had the chance to interview multiple reality show stars, including Randy Jackson, Nick Cannon, Heidi Klum, Mel B and John Cena. Fun Fact: he’s been to every single Idol Live! Tour.
The Magnificent Seven remake has a major production update for the upcoming MGM+ Western series.
Tim Kring, the creative mind behind shows such as Crossing Jordan and Heroes, created and executive-produced the new TV show that reimagines 1960's The Magnificent Seven. Filming began in Alberta, Canada, in June, with stars Matt Dillon, Will Patton, Michael Ealy, Danny Pino, Joanne Froggatt, Amy Forsyth, Joshua Close and Ken Yamamura.
Now Dillon has confirmed that production has wrapped on The Magnificent Seven. During an interview on Today, the actor explained that he's never filmed a Western before, so he enjoyed the experience.
Dillon then claimed that the eight-episode MGM+ show is "not really a remake 'cause it's serialized...so it's longer and a lot of backstory." His version of The Magnificent Seven will embrace "classic Western storytelling" while also leaning into what life was really like back then. "It was rugged, so that was a lot of fun," Dillon added.
Matt Dillon: "Yeah, [we just wrapped filming The Magnificent Seven]. I've never done a Western, so that was good to do that. It's not really a remake 'cause it's a serialized—it's eight parts, so it's longer and a lot of backstory. It's interesting because it embraces the kind of classic Western storytelling but sort of the way it really was too. It was rugged, so that was a lot of fun."
Dillon is best known for starring in movies like My Bodyguard, The Outsiders, Drugstore Cowboy, There's Something About Mary, Crash, and the new biopic I Play Rocky. His TV credits include Wayward Pines and High Desert. In The Magnificent Seven, Dillon plays Chris Adams, a member of a group that attempts to save a village from an ambush by outlaws.
The Institute season 2, which premieres on MGM+ November 8, finished filming in June, giving it a five-month post-production window. From season 4 also had a five-month window before its April 2026 premiere. The Westies, a new crime drama starring J.K. Simmons and Titus Welliver, debuted about eight months after it reportedly wrapped production.
Meanwhile, the cast of the upcoming Bosch spinoff, Bosch: Start of Watch, shot its final scenes this June, and the series premieres seven months later on January 10, 2027. While MGM+ hasn't announced a premiere date for The Magnificent Seven yet, these production timelines suggest a spring or early summer 2027 release.
The original Magnificent Seven came out 66 years ago and starred Steve McQueen, Yul Brynner, Robert Vaughn, Charles Bronson, Horst Buchholz, James Coburn, and Brad Dexter. The Western is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a critic score of 93% and an audience score of 87%.
It spawned the sequels Return of the Seven, Guns of the Magnificent Seven, and The Magnificent Seven Ride!, as well as a two-season TV show of the same name that aired from 1998 to 2000.
Then, in 2016, MGM and Training Day director Antoine Fuqua released a remake of The Magnificent Seven with Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Vincent D'Onofrio, Ethan Hawke, Peter Sarsgaard, Luke Grimes and Matt Bomer.
The film grossed $162.4 million at the box office. Unlike the overwhelming praise that its predecessor got, this big-screen remake received mixed-to-positive reviews, with 64% from critics and 71% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Now Kring is bringing The Magnificent Seven back to the small screen with a new take on the classic Western.
