Il Cancelliere tedesco Friedrich Merz è arrivato a Kiev domenica (4 ottobre), accompagnato dai vertici di aziende tedesche del settore della difesa, per manifestare sostegno al Presidente Volodymyr Zelenskyy a fronte della crescente ondata di attacchi russi contro le città ucraine.

"Mi sono recato a Kiev oggi perché l'Ucraina ha bisogno di tutto il nostro sostegno nelle prossime settimane", ha dichiarato Merz in un comunicato scritto, sottolineando come le forze russe stiano bombardando centri abitati, edifici residenziali e impianti di riscaldamento. "Se la Russia non verrà fermata, prima o poi la sua macchina bellica si rivolgerà contro di noi".

"Oggi dirò al Presidente Zelenskyy: 'Potete continuare a contare sul nostro aiuto'", ha aggiunto Merz.
