New Lantern Color Announced By DC, Permanently Rewriting Green Lantern Lore

DC has announced a new Lantern color is coming to Green Lantern lore, with the power to kill off the publisher's most indestructible character - the 'Main Man' Lobo, aka the Last Czarnian.

DC is currently publishing the 'Last Death of Lobo' arc. Lobo's incredible healing factor has resurrected him from death numerous times, but on this occasion, DC is hyping up that its new Lantern will "become the last man to kill Lobo for the last time."

What makes this development particularly fascinating for Green Lantern fans is that the villain in question was already a unique Lantern color, but is gaining a new designation to go after Lobo.

DC Announces 'Blood Garnet' Lantern Will Kill Lobo

In the recent Lobo #7 - from Skottie Young, Jorge Corona, Sarah Stern and Nate Piekos - Lobo is ambushed by a mysterious cyborg. Tempted to his home planet of Czarnia, Lobo is beaten within an inch of his life by a powerful, serpentine cyborg covered in glowing purple diodes.

There has never been a 'Blood Garnet Lantern' before in DC lore...

This cyborg is the overarching villain for 'Last Death of Lobo,' with the summary for Lobo #9 describing them as "the Blood Garnet Lantern." A deep red crystal in the real world, there has never been a 'blood garnet' Lantern before in DC lore, though rage-powered Red Lanterns are common.

However, this codename isn't the only one used by the villain, with Lobo #7 ending by revealing a name that will be familiar to fans of recent Lobo comics - Francis Dalex, the universe's first Mauve Lantern.

Green Lantern's New Mauve Lantern Explained

The Mauve Lantern debuted in the recent Lobo #3 (from Young, Corona, Piekos, Nicoletta Baldari and Jean-François Beaulieu) in a flashback story from Lobo's childhood. The young Francis Dalex was a trainee Green Lantern whose powers were transformed by his "abundance of glee," turning him into the first Mauve Lantern.

As a Mauve Lantern, Francis could only summon energy constructs that expressed happiness. Tragically for the young hero, Lobo stole his ring, and the malevolent antihero's warped sense of glee caused an invasion of lethal teddy bears, flowers and butterflies. The Green Lantern Corps intervened, confiscating the ring and retiring Francis in disgrace.

Now, the humiliated former hero has gained a new source of power, having grown to loathe Lobo and crave his destruction.

What Can DC's New Blood Garnet Lantern Do?

So far, fans don't know how Fracis became the Blood Garnet Lantern, though he's clearly had his body enhanced with a huge amount of cybernetics. The new Blood Garnet Lantern crackles with deep purple energy, being as strong and durable as Lobo, while also able to blast him with electricity-esque energy.

The Blood Garnet Lantern hasn't yet shown the ability to create energy constructs, but is shown zapping Lobo's brain, causing the antihero to recognize his old enemy. It's possible the Blood Garnet Lantern is able to weaponize old memories.

Lobo is one of DC's most durable characters, with a healing factor so powerful that he is able to regenerate from a single drop of blood. With Jorge Corona's cover for Lobo #9 showing the antihero's grave and the issue promising the introduction of Lobo's ghost "LoBOO!", it seems the Blood Garnet Lantern's powers are powerful enough to do what no-one else could - put Lobo down for good.

DC's New Blood Garnet Lantern Is a Permanent Addition to DC Lore

While Lobo is a funny character used to tell extreme stories, his adventures are still official canon in the DC Universe. Introducing the Mauve Lantern made it canon that excess joy can transform a Green Lantern into a new form, and the transformation from Mauve to Blood Garnet - a process that has yet to be revealed - will now likewise be canonized.

DC's 'Last Death of Lobo' is killing off its most indestructible hero, as the new Blood Garnet Lantern finds a way to do something no-one else has managed - permanently kill Lobo.
