'Haiku' actor Aegan responds to nepotism criticism and social media hate, says ‘I am very privileged, but it’s not without pain’

Actor Aegan has spoken openly about privilege, nepotism and the flak he has faced on social media. While addressing the promotional event for his upcoming film 'Haiku', actor Aegan acknowledged that being a producer’s son has given him certain privileges that actors without industry connections may not enjoy.

However, he maintained that his journey has also had its share of hardships. His comments come amid growing online discussions about his family background and the opportunities available to star kids ahead of the film’s release. Aegan said he understands why aspiring actors without industry connections may feel disappointed when those from film families appear to have easier access to opportunities.

Aegan says he understands aspiring actors’ pain amid nepotism debate

Addressing the nepotism debate, Aegan openly admitted that he enjoys certain privileges because of his family background.

“I have to openly admit that I am very privileged. Not everyone thinks that, but yes, I got it easily. I have to admit that,” he said. At the same time, he pointed out that privilege does not mean a person’s journey is without challenges. The actor also spoke about his responsibility towards newcomers and said he wants to create opportunities for other aspiring performers through his production ventures.

Mentioning actors such as Sethu and Adheershan, he expressed his intention to work with more emerging talents.

He also said he hopes to collaborate with filmmakers DK and Selva in the future, making it clear that he wants to support others trying to establish themselves in cinema.

Aegan also addressed the online comments about being a producer’s son, revealing that he had been seeing such criticism on Twitter over the past few days. In a light-hearted response, he pointed out that he began his acting career before his father became a producer.

“My father didn't start the production house. Actually, I launched as an actor. I launched my father as a producer. He should thank me,” he said. The actor also spoke about the amount of work his father has put into the film, explaining how late-night calls about editing and songs have kept the team busy.

His remarks offered a glimpse into the pressure involved in producing a film, even for someone with industry connections.

Aegan’s 'Haiku' gears up for October 23 theatrical release

Directed by Yuvaraj Chinnasamy, 'Haiku' stars Aegan alongside Femina George and Sridevi Apalla. The feel-good romantic entertainer follows a young man who is the only male student at a women’s college and finds himself caught between two love interests. Harisharan Ram, who directed Joe, has contributed additional screenplay work. Siddhu Kumar has composed the music, while the first single, 'Karu Vizhi,' sung by Armaan Malik and written by Mohan Rajan, has been released. The film’s digital streaming rights have reportedly been acquired by Netflix.

Scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 23, 'Haiku' will now look to win audiences over with its story as Aegan’s comments add another talking point to its promotional campaign.
