ABUCAY, Bataan — A 60-year-old man died after accidentally falling into an uncovered excavation more than 30 feet deep, reportedly dug by unidentified treasure hunters, in Abucay, Bataan.

Police identified the victim as Antonio Villanueva, a resident of Barangay Calaylayan, who gathered bamboo and other materials to sell to flower shops.

Villanueva’s family grew worried when he failed to return home on Friday night, Oct. 9, and sought help locating him.

A rescue team composed of personnel from the municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and local police was organized to search for the missing man.

Villanueva was found dead at the bottom of the excavation and was extricated shortly before noon on Saturday. /das
