Why did Prue Leith leave The Great British Bake Off?

The Great British Bake Off is undergoing a massive change in 2026 – with one of its iconic faces missing from its line-up.

After nine years, 90 main episodes, plus dozens of celebrity specials, Christmas episodes and the American spin-off, Dame Prue Leith has hung up her apron and said goodbye to the tent.

While Paul Hollywood remains as judge, with Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding back as hosts, there's a brand new judge ready to go in the shape of Nigella Lawson – and she's already proven a hit in the tent.

But why did Prue decide to say goodbye to the Bake Off, and what has she said about her replacement?

Prue officially announced her exit from The Great British Bake Off in January 2026.

In her official statement, she said: "Bake Off has been a fabulous part of my life for the last nine years, I have genuinely loved it and I’m sure I’ll miss working with my fellow judge Paul, Alison [Hammond] and Noel [Fielding] and the teams at Love Productions and Channel 4.

"But now feels like the right time to step back (I’m 86 for goodness sake!), there’s so much I’d like to do, not least spend summers enjoying my garden.

"Whoever joins the team, I’m sure they’ll love it as much as I have. I feel very lucky to have been part of it."

Prue had been a mainstay on the series since the show moved from the BBC to Channel 4 in 2017, working alongside Paul Hollywood to judge contestants' bakes.

In March, while speaking on The Shift podcast, Prue admitted that part of her reason to make an exit was due to her age – noting that, at 86, she isn't as nimble as she once was.

"Ever since I've been on Bake Off, Paul has always teased me because I'm so much older than him," she said.

"He'd say things like 'Come along deary, upsy daisy', 'time for your nap' or 'time for your tea', or something or other," Prue added. "This is a running joke... but of late I've thought 'Actually, you're right mate'.

"If I had stayed on Bake Off, I'd have asked for a ramp to get into my Winnebago. Paul's teasing would have become absolutely true, so he would have probably stopped doing it."

She also later added to The Spectator that she was considering an exit for a while.

"Finally, though, the desire to work less and play more got to me," she said. "Bake Off and its offshoots such as The Great American Baking Show and even the Christmas specials are all filmed in the summer, which has meant I could never have a summer holiday."

Who has replaced Prue Leith on The Great British Bake Off?

Nigella Lawson was announced to be the new Bake Off judge just five days after Prue's exit announcement.

In a statement, Lawson said she was “uncharacteristically rather lost for words right now”.

She continued: “Of course it’s daunting to be following in the footsteps of Prue Leith and Mary Berry before her, great dames both, but I’m also bubbling with excitement.

"The Great British Bake Off is more than a television programme, it’s a National Treasure – and it’s a huge honour to be entrusted with it. I’m just thrilled to be joining the team and all the new bakers to come, I wish the marvellous Prue all the best, and am giddily grateful for the opportunity!”

Speaking to Radio Times and other press about the new role, she admitted she was hesitant to take on the role, largely due to the large shoes that Prue and her predecessor, Mary Berry, had left behind.

"I just wanted to make sure because I... you know, I did feel a bit that... I was following two very eminent ladies, and I wanted to make sure that I felt I could do it," she said.

Nigella makes her debut this season, which begins on Tuesday 22 September.

What has Prue Leith said about Nigella Lawson?

Prue has already given Nigella her seal of approval ahead of her debut in the Bake Off tent, simply declaring her "perfect" as the announcement was made.

In February, when asked by BBC Radio Oxford if she had any guidance for her successor, Dame Prue said: "She doesn't need any advice from me."

"She's so good and she will bring to it's a whole fresh look and she'll be wonderful," she added. "She's funny, she knows her onions and she's delightful."

Later speaking to The Spectator, Prue added: "(Lawson is) also really nice, mighty glam and seriously bright, sexy and sassy. I’m just glad she wasn’t in the running nine years ago."

The Great British Bake Off will return on Tuesday 22 September at 8pm on Channel 4.
