Indonesia hosts ASEAN forum on journalistic copyright protection

Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Law Ministry and Press Council are co-organizing the ASEAN Forum on the Protection of Journalistic Works in the Copyright Regime in the Digital Era to help strengthen safeguards for journalistic content across Southeast Asia.
Director General of Intellectual Property at the ministry Hermansyah Siregar said on Saturday the forum, taking place in Badung, Bali, from October 9 to 11, marks an important step in addressing emerging challenges facing the media industry.
"The rapid development of digital technology and artificial intelligence has created new challenges for journalistic copyright, particularly the unauthorized commercialization of content and the use of journalistic works as training data for AI models," he said.
In this regard, Siregar said the ministry views the ASEAN forum as a platform for fostering a common understanding, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and formulating adaptive and equitable legal protection mechanisms for journalists and media organizations across the region.

He added that the forum aims to enhance cooperation among ASEAN member states and generate policy recommendations to foster a healthier digital ecosystem that provides legal certainty and safeguards the economic rights of news creators against emerging digital threats.
Furthermore, he emphasized collective efforts by ASEAN countries are crucial in protecting the intellectual property rights of the press and ensuring the sustainability of a quality, credible, and competitive media industry in the digital era.
Press Council Deputy Chairman Totok Suryanto underscored the need to establish clear and comprehensive provisions governing the intellectual property rights of journalists and media organizations.
"It is important that we ensure journalistic works are properly valued because they are the result of hard work and intellectual effort," he said.

Participants are encouraged to discuss solutions to emerge practices that the media industry considers detrimental, including content aggregation, crawling, scraping, and the unauthorized use of journalistic works without fair compensation.
