Bali's Pengambengan Port project to create 25,000 jobs: Minister

The Indonesian government estimates that the development of the Pengambengan Fishing Port in Jembrana District, Bali, into a modern fisheries hub will create jobs for up to 25,000 people.
Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said local residents would be able to take advantage of employment opportunities generated by the project, supported by training and capacity-building programs.
Funded by an investment of around Rp1.2 trillion (approximately US$67 million), the port expansion forms part of a broader integrated fisheries industrial estate, he said in a statement cited in Jakarta on Friday.
Trenggono added that the government also envisions Pengambengan as a docking hub for large fishing vessels, including tuna fishing boats.
He explained that the port is being designed as a modern, clean, and hygienic fisheries facility capable of enhancing the competitiveness of Indonesia’s fisheries industry.
“Our hope is that the port will become a destination that integrates a modern fisheries industry with tourism,” the minister said.
The local fishing community has welcomed the project, hoping that it will create alternative sources of income during periods when fishing activity declines.
Anan, a local fisherman, said such lean seasons often leave fishers unemployed for extended periods, forcing many to seek alternative work to make ends meet.
He therefore hopes that the development of the Pengambengan port will include cold storage and boat repair facilities that can provide employment opportunities for fishers unable to go to sea.
“That way, we will not have to remain idle for long during the lean season,” he said.
Another fisherman, I Ketut Sumajaya, voiced concern about siltation in the anchorage basin, saying it has hampered loading and unloading activities.
“The presence of a modern port will make it easier for us fishers to load and unload fish and distribute them to processing facilities,” he said.
