Amazon.com (AMZN) is negotiating to acquire artificial intelligence startup Decart AI in a deal valued at approximately $7 billion, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The transaction could be finalized soon, although negotiations remain ongoing and an agreement is not guaranteed, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the discussions.
The potential acquisition follows an unsuccessful effort by Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI chatbot, to purchase Decart for approximately $6 billion. Anthropic conducted due diligence on the startup before deciding against the transaction in September.
Founded in 2023 by Israeli engineers Dean and Orian Leitersdorf, who are brothers, and Moshe Shalev, Decart is part of a growing market for artificial intelligence technology.
For Amazon investors, the potential acquisition would represent another multibillion-dollar commitment to AI as the company competes with other technology giants to expand its capabilities. The reported $7 billion valuation also underscores the high prices companies are willing to consider for emerging AI businesses.
