Menzies upsets Van Veen to win second title of year

Scotland's Cameron Menzies is celebrating his second tournament win of the year after beating Gian van Veen to the Players Championship 29 title in Den Bosch.

Menzies raced into a 5-0 lead against the home favourite, who is third in the PDC rankings, before prevailing 8-4.

"To go and win another ProTour is awesome. I'm so happy," said Menzies.

"This is my fifth year on the tour and I've won four ProTours. That's not bad I suppose.

"My aim is to make a good life for myself. That's the aim that I think is achievable, but winning a major and having a good run at the World Championship would be amazing.

"I've put more effort in this year than I ever have because I nearly lost it all and I'm grateful to be in this position."

Menzies, ranked 26th, had considered quitting darts earlier this year after damaging his hand while angrily punching a drinks table following a first-round exit at the World Championship.

In July, the Scot was victorious at Players Championship 23 in Leicester.

Later that month, Menzies beat world number two Luke Humphries in the first round of the World Matchplay, only to fall ill in his next match.

En route to the final in Den Bosch, he got past Kevin Doets, Jeffrey de Graaf, Wessel Nijman, Benjamin Pratnemer, Jim Long and Nick Kenny.
