The officially endorsed Ninja Kidz web series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Return arrived in mid-August, debuting a refined look for the MMPR Rangers’ costumes. The fan-made YouTube show, which was produced in partnership with Playmates, is significant for several reasons (not least of which is that it’s the first officially endorsed live-action Power Rangers show since 2023’s Cosmic Fury), but successfully updating the iconic look of the Mighty Morphin Rangers may be its biggest contribution to the franchise.

While there’s been controversy surrounding the use of generative AI in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Return, the Ninja Kidz web series has also attracted considerable enthusiasm, especially for its treatment of the classic Ranger costumes. The new Mighty Morphin uniforms have been embraced as a perfect balance of modernization and homage to the classic look. That enthusiasm is hardly surprising considering the person behind the redesigns.

TokuJay, the professional name of Jay Sullivan, is a UK-based artist whose Project re:Power work has become particularly popular in the Power Rangers fandom. TokuJay is known for taking established Ranger designs and reimagining them in ways that make them feel more realistic than the show’s low-budget Super Sentai spandex roots. TokuJay’s new suits for Ninja Kidz’ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Return follow this approach, and it works wonderfully.

The Rangers uniforms in the Ninja Kidz series remain unmistakably MMPR, but the armor has more definition, the materials look more substantial, and familiar elements have been given greater visual detail. The redesigns do not attempt to replace what made the originals work. Instead, they treat the 1993 uniforms as a foundation and build upon them, making the new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers costumes feel more like modern live-action superhero attire without stripping away their identity.

The Ninja Kidz project may be considerably smaller than the now-scrapped Disney+ reboot, but its upgraded costumes demonstrate that a modern Power Rangers aesthetic doesn’t require a massive budget or total reinvention. The changes and tweaks may be subtle in a lot of ways, but they’re nevertheless incredibly significant for an aesthetic that hasn’t meaningfully changed for over three decades.

Reinventing The MMPR Costumes Has Always Been Tricky

The costumes of the original Power Rangers squad are nothing short of iconic, which has also made them unusually difficult to reinvent. Their simplicity is part of their appeal: each Ranger has a distinctive color and helmet, while the shared design elements immediately communicate that they belong to the same team. Modernizing them always risks losing the qualities that made the look so memorable in the first place.

Both the 1995 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and 2017’s Power Rangers attempted to create new, more theatrical interpretations of the Rangers’ costumes. The results were divisive. The 1995 movie suits dramatically swapped out the spandex for armor, while the 2017 film embraced a much more elaborate, alien-inspired aesthetic. Both were legitimate attempts to make the Rangers look appropriate for their respective big-screen productions, but neither became the definitive modern MMPR look.

TokuJay's designs have arguably come closer than either movie to finding that balance. His Project re:Power concepts preserve the instantly recognizable shapes and colors while introducing additional texture and detail. It’s a relatively restrained approach that’s made his reinterpretations popular among fans who want the iconic original Rangers to look contemporary without turning them into entirely different characters.

Jason, Zack, Trini, Kimberly, Billy, and Tommy can still be identified immediately as the classic Rangers, but their suits no longer look frozen in 1993.
