Smile 2 star Ray Nicholson opens up about the possibility of joining the Call of Duty movie cast, which would reunite him with The Mosquito Bowl director Peter Berg.

It has been over a year since Paramount Pictures officially announced the development of Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan's upcoming Call of Duty movie with Activision. At the moment, the studio hasn’t finalized the official cast for its live-action adaptation, which is expected to premiere on June 30, 2028. While the Call of Duty movie cast remains vacant, Ray Nicholson has officially put his name in the hat by expressing his desire to join the high-profile project.

In an interview with Collider, Nicholson shared his interest in working with director Peter Berg again on Paramount Pictures’ Call of Duty movie. He described his possible casting as an “amazing” opportunity to work on a “really cool IP.” Interestingly, Nicholson recently collaborated with Berg on a similar project in the form of the World War II-set movie The Mosquito Bowl. The film will arrive in U.S. theaters on October 30, 2026, followed by its Netflix debut on November 25, 2026.

Ray Nicholson: I mean, that would be amazing. I’m pretty sure that they want all Brits, and I have the worst British accent of all time. So I’m working with a dialect coach secretly, 24/7. But it would be an honor to work with Peter again. Obviously, Call of Duty is really cool IP, and I think the fact that the film industry is getting into the video game space is really cool. And I hope that opens a lot of things up.

If Nicholson did get cast in Paramount’s Call of Duty movie, his experience starring in Netflix's war movie The Mosquito Bowl would most likely be useful for him. The upcoming World War II epic follows the true story of four American football players who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Joining Nicholson are Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Tom Francis, and Stacy Clausen. Nicholson’s other notable credits include Promising Young Woman, Licorice Pizza, Smile 2, Borderline, and Novocaine.

The live-action Call of Duty movie will be based on Activision’s popular first-person shooter video game franchise. The original games feature storylines that take place in multiple eras, including World War II and a modern-day setting. At the moment, further details about its plot remain under wraps, but director Peter Berg recently confirmed that the Call of Duty movie’s story will be set in the Modern Warfare universe, which began with 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Because of its popularity, it was followed by two more versions: 2009's Modern Warfare 2 and 2011's Modern Warfare 3.

In addition to directing, Peter Berg is co-writing the Call of Duty movie with Taylor Sheridan. Berg isn’t new to the genre, as he’s best known for his work on military action movies such as Battleship, Lone Survivor, and Deepwater Horizon. As for Sheridan, he previously wrote the scripts for the Sicario franchise and Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse. Berg, Sheridan, David Glasser, and Rob Kostich are set as producers. Before Paramount greenlit the project, Activision initially tried to produce a Call of Duty cinematic universe in 2015, with Tom Hardy and Chris Pine rumored to star.

The Call of Duty movie is scheduled to debut on June 30, 2028. Meanwhile, the studio’s target production start date remains under wraps.
