The ongoing Test series between South Africa and Australia has sparked a debate over the popularity of red-ball cricket, with former Australian opener David Warner expressing disappointment over the lack of spectators at the venues.

Despite featuring the world's top two Test teams, the series has struggled to draw sizeable crowds, prompting Warner to question whether the format is thriving. The stands were largely empty during the opening Test at Kingsmead in Durban, while rain further affected attendance during the first two days of the second Test at St George's Park in Gqeberha. The sparse crowds have raised concerns, particularly given the stature of the contest and its significance for both sides.

David Warner questions Test cricket's popularity

"We keep hearing how important Test cricket is, but where are the fans in South Africa? Empty stands, no atmosphere, and we’re supposed to believe the format is thriving?" Warner wrote on X.

"You can’t keep calling Test cricket the pinnacle of the game if no one turns up to watch it. Harsh reality, but someone has to say it. Pathetic," he added.

South Africa-Australia series struggles to draw crowds

The series carries considerable significance, with Australia entering as the world's top-ranked Test side and South Africa placed second.

It is also Australia's first Test tour of South Africa since the infamous 2018 ball-tampering scandal, while the Proteas are playing their first home Test series as reigning world Test champions.Despite the high-profile nature of the contest, the turnout has been underwhelming. The opening Test, which South Africa lost by 214 runs, attracted just under 20,000 spectators across five days at Kingsmead, less than a fifth of the venue's capacity.
