Charlie Hunnam is officially returning for a new Sons of Anarchy spin-off. However, this spin-off in question is not going to be anything like Mayans M.C. Instead, it will deliver a bizarre meta narrative in which Charlie Hunnam will play himself instead of reprising his role as Jax Teller.

Before Sons of Anarchy's ending credits start rolling, Charlie Hunnam's Jax Teller takes it upon himself to break SAMCRO's cycle of violence by sacrificing himself. The character's death leaves no room for his return in future follow-ups or spin-offs of the show. Owing to this, Hunnam's return to the crime drama franchise would not have made any sense on paper after the first series' completed run.

However, it looks like Sons of Anarchy has found a creative but strange workaround to have him back in the franchise. In a new spin-off show, titled Legends, Hunnam and many original cast members from the show will team up all over again for a whole new meta-story. Despite being a Sons of Anarchy extension, though, Legends will be nothing like its parent series.

Sons Of Anarchy’s Upcoming Spin-Off Brings A Strange Galaxy Quest Twist To The Show

The cast of Galaxy Quest

Written by Charlie Hunnam himself, Sons of Anarchy's upcoming spin-off show, Legends, will follow fictional versions of the actors playing themselves. The series unfolds at a fan convention where SOA's cast members, including Charlie Hunnam, reunite at a fan convention over a decade after the original show's end.

This is when the story takes a weird turn.

The lines between the actors' real lives and their former TV characters suddenly start to blur when they are forced to confront a real-world threat. Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Kim Coates, Tommy Flanagan, Theo Rossi, and Mark Boone Junior are all confirmed to return for the new show.

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is not involved with Legends and still holds the rights to the parent show's storyline and characters. The show, however, has nothing to worry about because it will seemingly function as its own thing. Instead of expanding Sons of Anarchy's existing lore, it will follow a strong meta-narrative where the actors will play themselves instead of their old characters.

As weird as Legends' storyline may seem, it is not the first show/movie to go down this meta storytelling route. 1999's Galaxy Quest did the same where it followed the story of a group of sci-fi actors who get dragged into an intergalactic war after signing autographs at fan conventions for years.

Little seems to be known about the upcoming spin-off's exact genre since more details about its story are yet to emerge. However, early revelations suggest it will be more of a thriller and serve as a self-parody of SOA and its characters.

Charlie Hunnam as Jax Teller in a still from Sons of Anarchy season 7

Kurt Sutter's Sons of Anarchy took itself seriously and dabbled with hard-hitting themes surrounding brotherhood, loyalty, family, the cyclical nature of violence, and the harrowing cost of legacy. Even its bittersweet final arc, where Hunnam's character goes out for a final ride before sacrificing himself, is still considered one of the most devastating deaths in TV history.

A self-parodying spin-off that marks Hunnam's return and completely flips the franchise's established tone certainly feels like a risky endeavor. Movies like Galaxy Quest and This Is The End have taken the same approach in the past and proven to be incredibly entertaining. However, they were not a part of an existing franchise.

Although Legends does not promise to be anything like Sons of Anarchy, fans of the original show will expect it to retain some qualities of its parent series. It is this expectation that could spell trouble for the upcoming spin-off series. Still, one cannot deny that Legends sounds quite intriguing on paper.

The fact that Charlie Hunnam himself has written it also suggests that it will prove to be a worthy spin-off without harming the established legacy of Sons of Anarchy.
