Indonesia, India elevate global roles through BRICS partnership: Envoy

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty said Indonesia and India have strong potential to strengthen their roles at the global level through their participation in BRICS.

In a special written interview with ANTARA on India’s BRICS Chairship this year, the ambassador said Indonesia and India hold a unique position as members of both BRICS and the G20.

“It offers India and Indonesia greater opportunities for a global role,” Chakravorty stressed.

As a new BRICS member, Indonesia has been actively participating in various BRICS initiatives across ministerial, technical, business, parliamentary, and people-to-people tracks.

He also expressed optimism that Indonesia and India, with their “strong multidimensional bilateral relations,” can leverage their positions as major developing countries to play a greater role at the global level.

The two countries’ membership in both BRICS and the G20 also adds greater substance to their bilateral relations. “There are not too many countries in the world that are part of both these frameworks,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chakravorty explained that India’s BRICS Chairship in 2026 has four priority pillars, namely resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability.

These priorities align with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “humanity first” and reflect a people-centered approach to BRICS cooperation.

Under the sustainability pillar, India has promoted cooperation on clean and renewable energy, climate action and adaptation, nature-based solutions, and sustainable consumption, he said.

India’s capital, New Delhi, is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit this weekend under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.”

President Prabowo Subianto is representing Indonesia at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. He arrived in the Indian capital on Friday evening local time.

Foreign Minister Sugiono and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya are accompanying the president as part of the Indonesian delegation.

Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela said Thursday that Indonesia will raise economic and financial inclusion as one of its key messages at the summit. Indonesia also aims to expand its economic partnerships through its BRICS membership, he added.
