The best Kruger routes for a half-day safari

Translate

You don’t need to spend an entire day driving around Kruger National Park to enjoy a good self-drive safari.

With some careful route planning, visitors can cover a rewarding section of the park in a few hours and still have time to stop at a picnic site, rest camp or viewpoint along the way.

The key is to choose a route that doesn’t require you to spend most of your available time simply getting to and from your destination.

SANParks publishes approximate travel times between the park’s camps and gates, based on the shortest routes at legal speed limits. Visitors should also allow additional time for stops and wildlife sightings. Here are some of the better options for a half-day self-drive safari.

1. Crocodile Bridge to Lower Sabie

Best for: First-time visitors and wildlife viewing

The route between Crocodile Bridge and Lower Sabie is one of the more manageable drives in southern Kruger.

SANParks estimates the journey between Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge at about one hour, before allowing for stops.

The area around the Sabie River is popular with visitors because the river attracts wildlife, while the road network gives motorists several options for exploring the surrounding area.

For a half-day trip, visitors can enter through Crocodile Bridge, drive towards Lower Sabie and return along the same or an alternative route.

Lower Sabie also provides a useful stopping point for breakfast, refreshments or a rest before heading back towards the gate.

2. Numbi Gate to Pretoriuskop

Best for: A shorter outing

If you don’t want to spend hours in the car, the route from Numbi Gate towards Pretoriuskop is worth considering.

SANParks estimates the drive between Numbi Gate and Pretoriuskop at just 20 minutes via the shortest route. That leaves considerably more time for wildlife viewing.

Visitors can also use the surrounding roads to create a longer loop before returning to the gate, rather than simply driving directly to the camp and back.

This is particularly useful for visitors who have only a few hours available.

3. Paul Kruger Gate to Skukuza

Best for: A short southern Kruger safari

Skukuza is only about 20 minutes from Paul Kruger Gate via the shortest route, according to SANParks. The surrounding southern Kruger roads provide plenty of opportunities to extend the drive into a half-day loop.

Skukuza is also one of the park’s largest camps, with restaurants, shops and other facilities, making it a convenient turnaround point.

Visitors should resist the temptation to simply drive directly between the gate and camp. The surrounding roads are where the real game-viewing opportunities begin.

4. Orpen Gate towards Satara

Best for: Big-cat country

The road between Orpen and Satara takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes via the shortest route, according to SANParks.

This makes it possible to travel towards Satara and return to Orpen within a half-day, although visitors should allow considerably more time if they stop for sightings.

The area around Satara is known for open grassland and is popular with visitors looking for lions and other plains-game species.

For a shorter outing, visitors can turn around before reaching Satara and explore some of the surrounding roads instead.

5. Malelane Gate towards Berg-en-Dal

Best for: Visitors entering from the south

Berg-en-Dal is particularly accessible from Malelane Gate. SANParks estimates the shortest drive between the gate and camp at approximately 20 minutes.

That makes the area useful for visitors who have only a morning or afternoon available.

The surrounding southern section of Kruger offers opportunities to see a variety of wildlife, while Berg-en-Dal provides a convenient place to stop before returning towards the gate.

How long is a half-day safari?

A half-day self-drive safari can realistically mean anything from around three to five hours, depending on your entry time and route.

Remember that the published travel times are minimum estimates, not predictions of how long your actual safari will take.

A vehicle stopping for elephants, lions or a leopard can easily spend much longer on a short stretch of road.

SANParks also publishes different gate opening times throughout the year. In November and December, for example, entrance gates open at 05:30 and close at 18:30.
