Noel Gallagher shocked and saddened by Manchester City breaches

Oasis star and longtime Manchester City fan Noel Gallagher has described his “shock” after learning that the football club was found guilty on virtually all counts of breaching Premier League financial rules.

News broke on Friday that City had been found guilty on all but one of the 115 charges laid by the Premier League in February 2023, charges the club have always strenuously denied.

Gallagher said he felt “quite sad” for the fans and the players.

Speaking on the Let Me Talk podcast, he said he was “surprised, because … the club have assured us all along that they vehemently denied any of these charges.

“So it was a bit of a shock to find out that we’ve been found guilty of all but one. But really overall, just quite sad really. Sad for the fans and for the players.”

Asked if it changes the context of moments like Sergio Aguero’s title-winning goal in 2012, Gallagher added: “Our focus as fans is always on the pitch and we know what we saw – they won it on the pitch.

“Whatever goes on in the boardroom, it’s nothing to do with the supporters or the players. The players won that game and won that title on the pitch.

“Whether some of those players should have been there or not, that’s nothing to do with the fans. We were there, we know what we saw.

“Does it taint it? I suppose in the eyes of everybody else in England it would, but I know what I saw and I know what I felt.”

The football fan is best known for fronting the Britpop band alongside his brother Liam Gallagher.

The group’s hit song Wonderwall became the unofficial anthem for England fans at the 2026 Fifa World Cup, with supporters belting out the lyrics to the team up until the semi-final stage where they were knocked out by Argentina.

Oasis reunited last year for their Live 25 tour, which sold out within minutes of tickets going on sale, and was estimated by Forbes to have generated more than £293 million in revenue.

They recently announced a follow-up 38-show Live 27 world tour which included dates at Knebworth, marking 30 years since their initial gigs at the Hertfordshire park.

The reunion came after a long-standing feud between Liam and Noel when the band split in 2009 – reportedly prompted by a backstage brawl at the Rock en Seine festival in France.

The band have eight UK number one singles and eight UK number one albums, with Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back In Anger and Roll With It among their best-known hits.
