The Resident Evil series has continued its reign of success with Resident Evil Requiem, and with the massive box office success of Zach Cregger's feature film, it looks like it's going to keep flexing for quite some time.
It's safe to say that Resident Evil 10 is coming at some point, but what about the remake backlog? Capcom has managed to get us through Resident Evil 1-4 in remake form, but we need 5 and 6, plus there's a potential new remake for RE1.
It's a lot, but thanks to confirmation on X, it seems like those missing remakes could be coming sooner rather than later.
As reported by X user RENews, Resident Evil producer Jun Takeuchi discussed series plans in the Biohazard 30th Special magazine, which recently went on sale at Tokyo Game Show (TGS). Now that the magazine is out, folks are starting to pick up on the interviews, and there are some juicy tidbits in there, especially from Takeuchi.
Here's a full breakdown, straight from the source himself:
"The current “Resident Evil” series is being developed along two tracks: the numbered titles allow players to experience the ongoing story of the series, while the remake series allows them to experience the past. Someday, the remake series will catch up with the era of the numbered titles, and we are already thinking about what we will do when that happens. In fact, we have been gradually preparing for that since around “Resident Evil Village.” The appearance of names such as Umbrella and Spencer, as well as the return of Raccoon City in 'Requiem,' are also in preparation for a crossover.”
The key phrase here is, "someday, the remake series will catch up to the era of the numbered titles." The team is "already thinking about" that era of the series, so this is a soft confirmation of Resident Evil 5 and 6 remakes.
While it remains to be seen how these remakes will be framed, it's safe to say that Resident Evil 5 and 6 have been highly requested remakes for a while now, for a variety of reasons. Both games were big sellers, and Resident Evil 5 centers on the partnership of heroes Chris and Sheva, who are together for almost the entire game. This led to a massive shift to co-op, which some fans loved, and others lamented, since it removed some of the series' tension.
Resident Evil 6 has its own baggage. As the biggest Resident Evil to date, it was jam-packed with multiple stories (essentially, multiple games), and a lot of them didn't quite coalesce the way fans wanted. A remake could make things right by keeping what worked and leaving out what didn't. Plus, it has a pretty extensive Mercenaries mode, so I'd love to see that recreated one day.
No matter how you feel about Resident Evil 5 and 6, the Resident Evil series will continue, and we'll likely see remakes of both. That's the plan for now, anyway.
