American Horror Story season 13 has already set a series record.

The new season brings back numerous characters from previous American Horror Story seasons and with some actors reprising multiple roles. This includes Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange), Tate Langdon (Evan Peters), Addie Langdon (Jamie Brewer), Elizabeth Short (Mena Suvari), Cordelia Goode (Sarah Paulson), Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts), Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe), Elsa Mars (Lange), James March (Peters), Kai Anderson (Peters), Winter Anderson (Billie Lourd), and Wilhemina Venable (Paulson).

Supreme witch — or the first one to die?

On Rotten Tomatoes, American Horror Story season 13 has debuted to a 40% audience score, which is the lowest in the show's history. The average is based on more than 50 ratings and may fluctuate as more are added to the aggregation site. A critics' score has not been calculated yet.

Prior to season 13, season 12 had the show's worst audience score at 42%. With 60% being the minimum threshold for a "Fresh" score, this is the fifth time in the show's history, and the third time in the last four seasons, that the audience score has been "Rotten." It is also significantly lower than the last crossover season, Apocalypse, which landed a solid 75%.

Many of the audience reviews express frustration with season 13's three-episode premiere, taking issue with the pacing, dialogue, and feeling as though nostalgia and fan service are being prioritized over the storytelling. American Horror Story season 13 breaking tradition by having shorter, 30-minute episodes is also mentioned in several of the reviews as a disappointment, along with the argument that it is contributing to the story feeling rushed. The season's 13 theme, which involves Ben DeSoto (Joey Pollari) continually encountering this number, is criticized as well.

Lange's performance as Constance is one of the only aspects of the three-episode premiere receiving consistent praise, although some reviews follow this up with confusion about why she is in New York City and how certain characters are able to be there based on what was established in prior seasons. Another positive sentiment is that 13 is an improvement over some of the more recent seasons, and that it has the potential to further improve in the coming episodes.

Since it is only 2% behind NYC as of this writing, season 13's audience score can feasibly break away from the status of having the worst audience score in the show's history. However, it would still have a long way to go in order to be considered "Fresh" and more so on par with Murder House, Coven, and many of the other seasons whose characters have been brought back.

The episode runtimes will remain consistent, so criticisms related to this are unlikely to change, but the American Horror Story season 13 release schedule may help in other respects. October 1 will see the release of two more episodes, followed by two on October 8, two on October 15, two on October 22, and the season finale on October 29. Releasing multiple episodes per week means audiences will get answers faster than in some of the past seasons.
