"I'm actually a Philadelphia Eagles fan. Jeffrey Lurie, the owner, is a good friend of mine. He came down to South Florida three different times trying to hire me. I gave it some thought. But hey, right now I'm a Miami Hurricane fan, that's the number one team for me." Johnson said.

Johnson discussed his relationship with Lurie and the possibility of coaching the Eagles after leaving the Cowboys. Although he considered the possibility, he did not accept the job. He also made clear that the Miami Hurricanes are currently his top team.

Lurie became the Eagles' owner in 1994, the same year Johnson left the Cowboys following disagreements with owner Jerry Jones. Johnson coached Dallas from 1989 through the 1993 season, leading the team to consecutive Super Bowl victories after the 1992 and 1993 seasons. His success with the Cowboys established him as a coach with a proven record of winning NFL championships.

After leaving the Cowboys, Johnson did not immediately take another NFL head coaching position. Instead, he moved into broadcasting and joined FOX NFL Sunday as an analyst. He later returned to coaching in 1996, taking over as head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Johnson held that position through the 1999 season.

Lurie made three trips to South Florida in an effort to hire Johnson. Although he considered the move, he ultimately declined before returning to coaching with the Miami Dolphins in 1996.

Johnson and Lurie remained close after the hiring discussions. Lurie also congratulated Johnson following his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Eagles are on a five-game losing streak during the 2026 season.. After winning their first two games, Philadelphia lost five consecutive games. Their latest defeat came against the Dallas Cowboys, who won 38–21, leaving the Eagles with a 2–5 record. The loss extended Philadelphia's losing streak to five games.

Although Johnson never coached the Eagles, he reflected on his long-standing connection with Lurie and said the Miami Hurricanes are the team he follows most closely today.
