LOOK: DepEd conducts school safety drills

MANILA, Philippines — Students at the Mandaluyong Science High School participated in a safety drill following back-to-back cases of school violence across the country.

The exercise at the City of Mandaluyong Science High School was part of the Department of Education’s (DepEd) national simultaneous school safety drill for active threat scenarios.

The exercise features a scenario briefing, as well as a full-scale lockdown drill.

The safety drill this time strictly banned all hyper-realistic or fear-inducing elements such as threat simulations, active aggressor role-players, weapons and graphic elements.

The drill began with students simulating a normal day at school.

While simulating a normal day, the students are then informed of an emergency (as alerted by the drill instructor). Once they hear the signal, the students rush to their classrooms to hide.

The students quickly lock themselves inside their classrooms, with assigned pupils and their adviser barricading the doors with chairs.

Hiding students are also directed to ensure that the doors are locked, curtains are closed and that the lights are turned off.

The school then simulated their principal coordinating with relevant agencies, in this case, the Philippine National Police.

Once authorities determine that the school is safe, the principal signals hiding students “all clear” to tell them that it’s finally safe to go outside.

The students then gather at their gym for a headcount, debriefing, and ensuring that everyone is safe and accounted for.
